The following graphs explore arrests and crime victims in the context of gender. The data is filtered by "Male" and "Female." The crime victim dataset contains a small portion of data labeled gender "X". For the purpose of comparing crimes and arrests across both datasets, gender "X" was not considered in the creation of the gender graphs.
First Insight: Males were crime victims more often than females.
Second Insight: Males were arrested more often than females.
Third Insight: The difference between male crime victims and female crime victims is not extremely large, at about 38,000, suggesting that the likelihood of being a crime victim is not heavily dependent on gender.
Fourth Insight: The difference between males arrested and females arrested is very large, at about 160,000. This suggests that males are committing far more crimes than females or the police have a bias against men.
Fifth Insight: Females are far more likely to be a victim of a crime than they are to commit a crime.
Crime and arrest by gender can be further broken down by crime type.
First Insight: Males make up more than three-quarters of individuals arrested.
Second Insight: Aggravated Assault is a leading cause of arrest across both genders; it is the top cause of arrest for females and the second highest cause for men.
Third Insight: Prostitution is a leading cause of arrest for females but it is a much less prominent cause for men.
Fourth Insight: In general, males and females share the same leading arrest causes, including driving under the influence, larceny, vehicle possession, general assault, and drug use.
Fifth Insight: Many of the arrests in the dataset do not have an associated crime listed. This could be indicative of disorganization in the criminal system or a lack of attention in the creation of this specific dataset.
First Insight: Intimate partner simple assault was the leading crime that women fell victim to. However, intimate partner assault was the 11th leading crime that men fell victim to. Similarly, intimate partner aggravated assault was the 11th most frequent crime for female victims, but the 20th most frequent crime for male victims. Therefore, women are far more likely to be victims of intimate partner assault than men.
Second Insight: Aside from intimate assault, there is no single crime that appears to be far more likely for a specific gender. The distribution of crime is relatively similar regardless of gender.
Third Insight: Across both genders, many people are victims of burglary. Burglary from a vehicle is more common than burglary for both genders.
Fourth Insight: Assault is involved in many of the leading crimes for both genders (including battery and assault with a deadly weapon).
Fifth Insight: There is great variety in the crimes that people in Los Angeles fell victim to. Gender does not heavily dictate crime incidents.
